Local Moving in Brisbane

Brisbane has lots of local moving companies, little ones, big ones, expensive ones, so-cheap-it-can't-be-true ones, but how do you know you're getting a good deal? And how do you decide which mover is right for you?

There are a few basic things you need to know before you start looking for a removalist, here is a short list of things to check for:

1. Are they offering a repair guarantee or insurance?

If the companies you look at are offering a repair guarantee you need to check that it's a comprehensive written document. If they're offering insurance BEWARE! Removal companies can't give you insurance because they're not an insurance broker or agent, often a company will claim you're 100% dinky-di insured, this is not true, if you haven't given them an estimate of the value of your possessions, filled out paper work and paid for it, there is no cover on your goods, don't be fooled.

2. Have they covered all the cost you can expect?

Make sure you know how much you're being charged, by the hour or at a fixed price. For local moving, the cheapest way to go is an hourly rate calculated in small time increments. Make sure there are no hidden charges for things like blankets or stairs, if the company is charging extra for these then they probably aren't the kind of company you want to move with. Another important price question for movers that charge an hourly rate is, what increments do they charge in? If they charge in hour or half hour increments your will likely be charged for large amounts of time you don't use for going a couple of minutes into their next block.

3. Have their removalists been properly trained or are they students, backpackers and labor hire?

Even some of the largest moving companies still have labor hire and untrained workers. This puts your goods at risk or damage or theft from inexperienced, subcontracted staff that don't know what they're doing. Check all the movers you are getting are trained. Also check you're not being referred to a subcontractor, subcontractors are notorious for passing the buck on damage and not having well trained employees.

4. Will they turn up and do the job at a specific time or within a time period?

Be wary of being promised a set time, especially in the afternoon. So they don't hold you up and leave you guessing, professional companies will give you a timeframe within which they are scheduled to arrive at your home. They will notify you when they know the time of arrival, so you know to get those last few things prepared and ready for the move!
